Federalism
This principle separate powers for the state and powers for the national government. The state's laws has to compile with the national law. The constitution also says that the state's have certain powers. This is shown in the 10th Amendment when it says the powers not given to the national government will be given to the state. Their main powers are is to choose their laws, elected officials and etc. But all powers must be in accordance with the constitution.
